These works were followed by a series of others which the town's priors commissioned from him on 21 st April 1466 for the Town Hall. Of these, a detached fresco of Christ on the Cross adored by Saints Jerome and Francis and the patron (probably the podesta of San Gimignano), preserved in the Museum of Sacred Art, still survives together with another, and another work of particular importance of its kind: indeed, Benozzo was entrusted with the restoration and completion of the Majesty painted by Lippo Memmi in 1317 in the Council Chamber, now known as the Sala di Dante (Dante Room). This fresco was considered one of the symbols of local civic glory and had already undergone alterations during the second half of the fourteenth century by a Sienese painter who extended the scene with the addition of two pairs of saints. Biography Lippo Memmi was part of interesting circle of artists who flocked around the illustrious Simone Martini. Memmi was brother-in-law to the great artist and was heavily by Martini's use of form and color. Martini had a enormously influential effect on all the young painters of Siena. | Lippo Memmi (c. 1291 – 1356) was an Italian painter from Siena. He was the foremost follower of Simone Martini, who was his brother-in-law. Simone Martini’s aristocratic language, rich in elegant Gothic forms, contributed to the development of the Gothic style. His fame brought him to work in Naples at the court of the King of France, at the Papal court in Avignon and in Assisi, where he executed the fresco cycle portraying the life of St. Martin in the lower basilica. Lippo Memmi can be considered the foremost följare of Simone Martini, tillsammans with whom he painted the magnificent Annunciation for the Cathedral of Siena (now in the Uffizi).
