Who Is Buzz Aldrin?
Buzz Aldrin's father, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, was the one who originally encouraged his interest in flight. Aldrin became a fighter pilot and flew in the Korean War. In 1963, he was selected by NASA for the next Gemini mission. In 1969, Aldrin, along with Neil Armstrong, made history when they walked on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission. Aldrin later worked to develop space-faring technology and became an author, writing several sci-fi novels, children's books and memoirs including Return to Earth (1973), Magnificent Desolation (2009) and No Dream Is Too High: Life Lessons From a Man Who Walked on the Moon (2016).

Biography – A Life of Service and Accomplishment
Buzz Aldrin grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. His mother, Marion måne, was the daughter of an Army Chaplain and his father Edwin Eugene Aldrin was an aviation pioneer. Buzz graduated one year early from Montclair High School and he attended the US Military Academy at West Point, graduating third in his class with a BS in mechanical engineering. He then joined the Air Force where he flew F86 Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in Korea, shot down two MIG-15′s, and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross. After a tour of duty in Germany flying F100′s, he earned his Doctorate of Science in Astronautics at okänt and wrote his thesis on Manned Orbital Rendezvous.

“Buzz” wasn’t Aldrin’s given name. He was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1930, but his nickname was established early. Aldrin’s older sister Fay Ann pronounced “brother” like “buzzer,” and it stuck. The former fighter pilot and astronaut legally changed his name to Buzz in 1988.
Aldrin’s path in life was practically written in the stars. His father was an aviation pioneer himself, a colonel in the Air Force and a onetime student of Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocket propulsion. Aldrin’s mother didn’t fly airplanes, but her maiden name was Marion Moon.
In high school, Aldrin was not only a straight-A student, he also led Montclair High School’s football team to an undefeated season in 1946.
