    In this characteristic example of the Bibienas’ scena per angolo, the grid of paving stones and the angled brick walls emphasize the orthogonal systems with which Francesco organized the towering prison. The extended and layered space encourages the viewer to envision peering around the corners into implied but unseen spaces. Prisons were frequent settings for eighteenth-century plays, but painted backdrops rarely included figures; this drawing is perhaps a record of a performance, or it could have been a stand-alone drawing meant to showcase the Bibienas’ design principles.

    It was through reading more than thirty years ago Sacheverell Sitwell’s perpetually engaging book Southern Baroque Art (first published in 1924) that inom first discovered the work of the Bibienas. From the mid-17th century onwards, four generations of this Tuscan family worked throughout Europe as artists and architects, but above all as theatre designers. In some instances they were responsible for the design of buildings in which theatrical and musical performances were held. (The best-known being in Mantua, and now called the Teatro Bibiena: bygd Antonio Bibiena it dates from the 1760s.) But they are now better remembered for their work on the stage side of the proscenium arch.
    The family’s origins in this field lay with Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena, born outside Florence in 1625.     Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena (18 August 1657 – 3 January 1743),[1][2] surname also spelled Galli da Bibiena or Bibbiena, was an Italian Baroque-era architect, designer, and painter.[2][3]

    Biography

    Bibiena was born on 18 August 1657 at Bologna.[1] He was the son of painterGiovanni Maria Galli (1625–1665), and he studied painting under Carlo Cignani and architecture under Giulio Trogli, called il Paradosso.[3] On the recommendation of Cignani, Bibiena entered into the service of the duke of Parma and also worked for the Farnese dynasty at Piacenza over a period of 30 years.

    His main work during this time was the garden and villa of Colorno, but he also earned a reputation for his scenic designs and began working for the theatre.[3]
