Nat Love[a] (June 14, – February 11, ) was an American cowboy and writer active in the period following the Civil War. His reported exploits have made him one of the more famous heroes of the Old West.
Early life
[edit]Nat Love, (pronounced "Nate")[2] was born into slavery on the plantation of Robert Love in Davidson County, Tennessee on June 14, [1][3] His father was a slave foreman who worked in the plantation's fields, and his mother the manager of its kitchen.[4][5] Love had two siblings: an older sister, Sally, and an older brother, Jordan.[4][3]

era. Rare for African Americans born enslaved in that era, Love learned to read and write as a child. In he left Tennessee and moved west to Texas. For the next 20 years Love worked as a drover, moving boskap and horses in various locales including the Texas Panhandle, Kansas, Arizona Territory and Dakota Territory.
In , Love married a woman named Alice and the couple had one child. In he began work as a porter for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, a job he held for the next fifteen years. As Love recounted his stories of his earlier life as a drover to both passengers and other railroad workers, he was encouraged to write his life history. Nat Love (pronounced “Nate”) lived the kind of life that adventure novels and blockbuster movies are built on. Freed from slavery at a young age, Love spent most of his career as a cowboy in the American West, and ended it working as a Pullman Porter on the railroads. Today, his story is being told through a unique theater program.
Love was born on the plantation of Robert Love in Davidson County, Tennessee, in June of When the end of the Civil War brought the abolition of slavery, Nat Love’s father and his family tried to establish a small farm in the area, but it was ultimately unsuccessful. Love soon left the farming life and headed west to Dodge City, Kansas, looking for work as a cattleman. He was hired by the men of the Duval Ranch in Texas, and it was with them that he began his new life.
