Almost everyone has heard of Frankenstein. You, yourself, might imagine a lumbering hulk of a man resurrected by a mad scientist. The pedant may correct you that, of course, the creature’s proper name is Dr. Frankenstein’s Monster. If this frustrates you, feel free to respond to your imaginary interlocutor that Victor von Frankenstein is a university student in the novel, and therefore has not earned the title of “doctor” when he reanimates his creation.
But regardless of quibbles over names and titles, the fact remains that Frankenstein is a seminal work of fiction, with profound influences on popular culture down to the current day. And to think, this novel was written when its author was only 18 years old.

The creation story of Mary Shelley's dark tale of science misused is nearly as famous as the novel itself.
The summer of 1816 became known as ‘the year without a summer’ due to the cold, dismal, damp conditions and torrential rain experienced throughout Europe, North America and Asia. Mary Shelley was a famous woman writer of the early 19th century. She is famous for her novel Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 in Somerstown, London. Her father was William Godwin and her mother was the famous writer Mary Wollstonecraft. Unfortunately, her mother died 11 days after Mary was born. Mary spent some time at a dame school.
However, Mary was mainly educated at home. She was a highly smart woman and she studied history, literature, and the Bible. Mary learned Latin, French, Italian, and Greek.
In 1812 Mary met Percy Bysshe Shelley for the first time. In 1814 she began a relationship with him. Mary Shelley had a daughter in February 1815 but the child died after a few days. However, in January 1816 Mary gave birth to a son named William. In May 1816 Mary, Percy, and their son traveled to Lake Geneva. While there Mary was inspired to write the novel Frankenstein. It was published in 1818. Mary married Percy on 30 December 1816 in London.
