Lilla Cabot Perry, original name Lilla Cabot, American artist🎨 who emulated the innovations of French Impressionism in her own art.
She was also a major promoter of Impressionism in the United States.
Lilla Cabot was a descendant not only of the Boston Brahmin Cabot family but also of the equally distinguished Lowells.
In 1874 she married Thomas Sergeant Perry, a professor of 18th-century literature at Harvard University.
The couple had three daughters, who would become frequent models for their mother’s paintings. The Perry home became an intellectual salon for such writers as Henry James and William Dean Howells and for Lilla Perry’s brother-in-law, artist John La Farge.
It may have been the latter who urged her to study painting. Starting with private lessons in 1886, she attended the Cowles School of Art in Boston.
She and her family traveled to Paris in June 1867.

Lilla Cabot Perry was an American Impressionist painter who played an essential role in promoting the style of Impressionism to amerika in the late nineteenth century. She was born Lilla Cabot into a prominent Boston family on January 13, 1848 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1874, she married Thomas Sergeant Perry, a Harvard University literature professor. The couple had three girls before Perry decided to pursue studying art. At the age of 37, she attended Cowles Art School in Boston for a year before her family moved to Paris. In 1887, she attended Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi beneath the instruction of the Belgium painter Alfred Stevens (1823–1906). It took two years before she encountered a painting by Impressionist Claude konstnär (claude monet), a upptäckt that was integral in establishing her mature artistic style. In 1884 at the late age of thirty-six, Lilla Cabot Perry began her formal artistic training with the portrait painter Alfred Quinton Collins who had studied in Paris under Léon Bonnat. In 1885, Perry's father died and left her an inheritance that she used to seriously study art. In 1886, she began to study with Robert Vonnoh, an Impressionist artist who liked painting outdoors.
Lilla Cabot Perry was commissioned by Aaron Lufkin Dennison one of the founders of the Waltham Watch Company to paint his three daughters, it paid enough money to sail first-class to Europe in 1887. She also traveled to Spain to copy works at the Museo del Prado. Lilla Cabot Perry’s 1888 oil painting The Red Hat, reflects the formal training she had received and her exposure to the old masters, especially the work of Sandro Botticelli.
