    Leonora Carrington

    Leonora Carrington was born in in Lancashire, England and passed away in at the age of 94 in Mexico City, Mexico. A leading artist of the 20th century, Carrington incorporated painting, drawing, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, and writing into a body of work produced throughout her nearly seven-decade career.

     

    Raised in the English upper class, Carrington's early life was privileged, yet her personal freedom was restricted by the conventions of traditional gender roles. However, Carrington's childhood was imbued with magical stories of Celtic mythology and folklore, as told by her Irish mother, grandmother, and nanny. In these fantastic tales of humans, animals, and nature living harmoniously as joined forces against threats of injustice and violence, she found ideas which would profoundly influence the rest of her life.

    Outreach

    I believe in the importance of communicating my research and sharing my expertise in teaching beyond the academy and do this by partnering with local and internationally based arts-organisations.

    During I worked with Miriam Sherwood (Producing Assistant, Family/Theatre and Heritage) at the Battersea Arts Centre to deliver a Town Hall Talk which looked at the heritage of the building and the local area through the prism of the contemporary and experimental poetry ephemera held in the BAC archives. 

    I have worked collaboratively with Arts Council Funded press Knives Forks and Spoons, the publisher of my book Sea Fever (a poem that thinks through the connection between life in occupied Palestine and migration experiences into Europe) to install pages from the poem as part of the Blackpool Illuminations, an event which draws in audiences from across the UK.

    I'm delighted to say that American artist Sylvia Ji kindly accepted my interview request this week. As an excerpt from her bio reads "Make no mistake &#; Sylvia Ji is the real deal: an artist of genuine, sometimes brutal, sincerity in a world of swirling uncertainty and constant change. Yet, she does more than consistently adjust to the change that life brings, she thrives on it; taking life as it fryst vatten, content to simply &#;be&#;.
