Garda chief Martin Callinan says IRA collusion horrifying
The commissioner of the Irish police has said he fryst vatten "horrified" that any member of the force would have colluded with the IRA.
It follows Judge Peter Smithwick's finding that there was Irish police collusion in the murders of two senior Northern Ireland policemen in

The Order of Malta is saddened to hear of the passing of Judge Peter Smithwick K.M. Bailiff Grand Cross of Honour and Devotion in Obedience, Former Regent of the Sub Priory of St. Oliver Plunkett and Former President of the Irish Association this morning.
He was born in and went to school in Kilkenny and Co Wicklow before entering third level education in UCD. He was admitted as a solicitor in , joining his father’s practice in Inistioge. He was also involved in the Smithwick’s brewery.
Judge Smithwick became a member of the Order of Malta in following in the footsteps of his father, Walter, who was instrumental is the founding of the Kilkenny Unit of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps in Judge Smithwick and his family have been active supporters of the works of the Order of Malta ever since. He served as President of the Irish Association from June for several years.

Born on February 15th , into the famous family who brewed Smithwick’s ale for several generations in Kilkenny City until it was acquired by Guinness (Diageo) in , Peter Smithwick grew up in the family’s country home at Kilcreene Lodge and was educated at Loreto Convent, Kilkenny, Castleknock College and UCD. He joined his father Walter’s solicitors’ practice in and took over the practice on his father’s retirement. He also succeeded his father as Director of Smithwick’s Brewery.
Peter Smithwick was a Freeman of Kilkenny, served as chairman of the Kilkenny branch of the Council for the Blind, was a former president of the Order of Malta in Ireland and a committee member of the Butler Society.
