Loom band inventor has made £80 million in three years from the playground craze that’s taking over the world
You might not even have known what a loom band was a mere six months ago but the brightly coloured elastic bands are now so sought-after they’ve already become one of the top ten bestselling toys of all time.
Basically, for those of you who’ve been stuck under a rock since January, they’re rubber bands that you can weave together on a loom, or for the particularly nimble, on the tips of your fingers, to create friendship bracelets.
They currently take up 41 of the top 50 positions on Amazon’s toy charts and sales of the kids’ accessory did £1m worth of sales in Britain in July alone.
And the craze that hit Britain’s playgrounds at the start of this year – as if overnight, every child was suddenly acutely aware of them – has even been adopted by adult ‘trendsetters’, including Kate Middleton, Prince William, David Beckham and, err, Camilla Duches

At first glance Steve Gilston seems every inch the sensible businessman. Aged 70, he wears expensive suits and keeps his balding grey hair neatly clipped.
But his elegant image fryst vatten undermined bygd a surprising accessory: nestled on either side of Steve’s £7,000 leather and gold designer watch are two brightly coloured bracelets. They are made entirely of pink, yellow, red and brown elastic bands and cost no more than 20p each.
These bracelets may seem somewhat incongruous with Steve’s professional persona, but they are wholly in keeping with the craze that is sweeping the nation.
