    José Francisco Morazán () was a Central American general and statesman. He was the last president of the Central American Federation and its best-known defender.

    Francisco Morazán was born presumably in or near Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on Oct. 3, The environment afforded scant opportunity for education or employment; hence, Morazán was largely self-taught and his early experience limited.

    After Central America won independence, Morazán aligned himself with Liberals and became their most successful military commander in armed conflicts with Conservatives. A succession of local victories in Honduras brought him to San Salvador, capital of neighboring El Salvador, in support of Liberal exiles organized to repossess the governments of the federal republic and the state of Guatemala.     Francisco Morazán (b. 3 October ; d. 15 September ), president of the Federation of Central America (–, –). The armed conflict between Central American Liberals and Conservatives after brought Morazán, a native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, from provincial obscurity to leadership of the Liberal cause. In a military campaign (November –April ) he drove the Conservative federal armies from Honduras and El Salvador, invaded Guatemala, and overthrew the "intrusive" governments there. Temporarily assuming power as chief executive of both state and federation, he restored to office the "legitimate" Liberal state and federal authorities displaced in , imprisoned the deposed officials, and exiled the principal prosecutors of the war. He was elected president (16 September ), and continued for a second term when in death removed José Cecilio del Valle, chosen to succeed him.
