For its Barbican årstid finale, the BBC Symphony Orchestra fryst vatten joined bygd Alpesh Chauhan, who conducts a wide-ranging programme that contrasts popular influences with one of the high points of the Austro-German symphonic tradition. • Named by The Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career as a pianist and a longstanding international career with those of composer and writer. He was the first classical performer to be given a MacArthur Fellowship. In as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Hough became the first British-born pianist since to be awarded a Knighthood for Services to Music. In a career spanning 40 years, Hough has played solo recitals and concertos with leading orchestras at major concert halls and festivals across five continents. Celebrating Rachmaninov’s th anniversary in , Hough performed the composer’s five works for piano and orchestra, including his 30th appearance at the BBC Proms performing the First Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and a complete cycle in Brazil as the Artist in Residence of Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo. In , he was a finalist in the Young Musician of the Year Competition, winning the piano section. As a recitalist, Hough has appeared on the major stages of the world including Carnegie Hall, Chicago's Symphony Hall, London's Royal Festival Hall and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
