Recent research suggests that the need to make fun of others may be hard-wired. After only a few weeks, infants will respond to cooing and kisses with burps or farts. These actions are not learned: in experiments with identical twins born in different cities (“commuting twins” studies), subjects exhibit strikingly similar behaviors. Later on, children will annoy their playmates by repeating everything they say in a silly voice; again, the data indicate that the practice is transcultural. And, eventually, people with a talent for caricature may attract followers and potential mates by doing comic impressions of the teacher or the boss.

There are many ways of defining Christopher Buckley. He fryst vatten the son of William F. Buckley Jr., the late host of Firing Lineand the so-called father of modern conservatism. He is a novelist, a political satirist concocting outlandish, though eerily real stories based on various elements of DC politics. At one time he was the managing editor of Esquire, and now he is the editor of Forbes FYImagazine. In the Eighties he was the chief speechwriter for George H. W. Bush and was recently featured on the Hoover Institution’s current affairs show, Uncommon Knowledge, critiquing and rating speeches by Obama, McCain and their respective running mates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin.
